Why it helps me think

I love the inexcapability of the car and giving myself a destination that takes hours. There are crazy signs on the open highway like, “Go to church your God is watching” or “Best Multivitamins for Cats and dogs”. I didn’t even know ther were vitamins for cats and dogs. Discovery is what I am talking about. No limits, just a good open highway and a Kerouacian mentality is all it takes. I never get lonely and I never get bored. I once drove to Louisiana for no reason at all. It was time of my life.

The Desert

The summer turns Arizona into a roadway hotplate. I lather up some SPF 50 and soak my thrift store T’s with sweat driving from L.A. to El Paso. I love it. It’s a way to purge the troubles of the city. Somehow, everything slows down when I’m going fast.

Then the night comes. I leave the top down and the air is still warm, but a comfortable sort of warm. There’s not enough civilization to provide for any light, just blackness for hours, until finally I can see the dim glow of Santa Fe reflected off the clouds in the sky, still a hundred miles away

But, now It’s September and the threshold for top down night time desert driving has been reached. The day is still enjoyably and unbearably hot, but the night time chill and the wind at 80mph just ruins the drive. So my travel pace slows down now. I take these trips for the joy of the drive, so it just takes me longer to get there this season.
